Car Sensing Bike Light


After Hackathons (when programmers meet for a weekend or even a week to do collaborative programming, also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest), come Make-a-thons. These bring together people working in a range of disciplines such as designers, tech geeks and eco-consultants to create physical objects. Tom Hulme, design director at Ideo, the innovation consultancy, describes a recent Make-a-thon held at their London offices over a weekend working on physical projects, including a new smart bicycle light (above) that warns the cyclist of a vehicle’s proximity by sounding a siren and flashing a sad face to warn the driver. “It’s the adoption of the hacker culture to making stuff. We get passionate people in a room with no distractions, working towards creating physical prototypes.”
